About this trail

Starting near the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory on the Poombarai road, this trail heads out through shola patches at well over 2,000 m in the Palani hills and ends at the falls at Gundar Zero Point. Birders rate it highly, since the upper Palanis hold several species found only in the Western Ghats, and butterflies are common in sunny spells. The route is 5 km each way and takes about 4 hours; although graded easy, the altitude and cool, damp air call for a light jacket. Leopards and Indian gaur also live here. Good for families and beginners.

Out and back: 5 km each way

When to go: Best from October to March, after the monsoon, when streams run full and the air is clear. Expect rain and leeches from June to September, and hot afternoons in the foothills from April.
