The ascetic on the hill

Palani, the third abode, is the one most closely tied to a story every Tamil child knows. Sage Narada brought Shiva a single fruit of wisdom and promised it to whichever son circled the world first. Murugan set off on his peacock; Ganesha simply walked around his parents and won. Hurt, Murugan renounced everything and came to this hill as Dhandayuthapani, a young ascetic with only a staff. Sangam poetry knows the place as Thiruaavinankudi.

Bogar's image

Temple tradition holds that the image in the sanctum was made by the Siddhar Bogar from navapashanam, a blend of nine herbal and mineral substances, and the abhishekam offerings poured over it are treasured as prasadam. Tradition credits early Chera kings with the first shrine; Pandya and Nayak rulers and many devotees enlarged it over the centuries. The temple is run by the HR&CE Department.

Climbing up

Pilgrims climb 693 steps or take the gentler elephant path, and many carry kavadi or have their heads tonsured as a vow. For those who can't climb, a winch railway and a rope car run to the top. Palani panchamirtham, a thick sweet of banana, jaggery, ghee, honey and cardamom, holds a Geographical Indication tag. The biggest crowds come for Thaipusam, when pilgrims walk to Palani from across Tamil Nadu.

Visiting etiquette

Dress
Modest clothing is expected: shoulders and knees covered. Veshti/dhoti or trousers with a shirt for men, and saree or churidar with dupatta for women are ideal. Wear something you can climb in comfortably.
Footwear
Footwear is left at the foot of the hill: the steps are climbed barefoot. Start early, before the stone heats up.
Photography
Camera phones are not allowed in the hill temple; deposit them at the counters (₹5 under the HR&CE rules from 1 September 2026). Photography is never permitted in the sanctum.
Entry
Entry is free; special-darshan, winch and rope-car tickets are sold separately. Following a 2024 Madras High Court order, boards state that non-Hindus may not go beyond the flagstaff (kodimaram).
Timings
The hill temple is generally open about 06:00–20:00, opening earlier on festival days. The winch and rope car keep their own hours (the rope car pauses at midday), and both can have long queues on holidays.
Offerings
Panchamirtham and vibhuti are sold as prasadam at the temple counters. Tonsuring and kavadi are common vows; follow the designated areas for them.
Behaviour
Keep to the left on the steps, let kavadi-bearers pass and rest in the mandapas on the way. Queue patiently, walk around shrines clockwise and don't touch the deities, priests or ritual items.
