About this trail

Above Papanasam, inside the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, this route links Karaiyar and Moolakasam on a level path through wet evergreen forest. Streams and still pools appear along the way, and on clear days the Agasthyamalai range fills the skyline. The walk is 4 km one way and takes about 3 hours, graded easy; a forest vehicle runs you from the Mundanthurai range office to the start and collects you at the end. Birders and butterfly watchers will be busy, and Nilgiri langurs, sambar and spotted deer live here too. A gentle introduction to southern Western Ghats rainforest for families and beginners.

One way: 4 km, with forest transport to the start and back to the reception point

When to go: Best from October to March, after the monsoon, when streams run full and the air is clear. Expect rain and leeches from June to September, and hot afternoons in the foothills from April.
