The trek to Dolphin's Nose begins at the Vattakanal junction, about 4 km from Kodaikanal town. The trail descends through dense shola forest — mossy, ancient, and dim — before emerging onto grassland slopes where the path narrows to a rocky ridge. The final approach to Dolphin's Nose is along a ledge with a sheer drop on both sides — exhilarating but safe with a guide.
Dolphin's Nose is a flat-topped rocky projection that juts out over a 600-metre vertical cliff. Standing on it, you look straight down at the tiny village of Periyanayakanpatti on the plains far below. On clear days, the view extends over the Vaigai Dam and the patchwork of paddy fields around Madurai. Your guide points out the Echo Point phenomenon — sounds from the viewpoint bounce off the opposite cliff face.
The trek passes through two distinct ecosystems: the shola forest (evergreen, with tree ferns, orchids, and mosses) and the grassland (home to the Nilgiri tahr). Your guide is trained in local botany and can identify medicinal plants used in Siddha medicine — the forest is essentially a living pharmacy.
The trek is moderate in difficulty — about 8 km round-trip with 400 metres of elevation change. It takes 4-5 hours including breaks. The trail can be slippery after rain. The guide carries a first-aid kit, and the group maintains a pace suitable for the least experienced trekker. Tea and snacks are served at the viewpoint.
