About this trail

The shortest of the three Vellagavi trips, this two-day trek goes down from Vattakanal near Kodaikanal to the village and back again the same way. Day one is a 2–3 hour descent past Mountain View, Dolphin's Nose and Echo Point to Vellagavi, where you have lunch, explore the village and walk about a kilometre to a sunset viewpoint before a campfire and a night in tents. On day two you watch the sunrise and climb back up, which takes 3–4 hours. It is 5 km each way, graded moderate. Leopards, Indian gaur and pythons live here. Ideal for fit beginners who want a first camping trek.

Two-day camp trek, out and back: 5 km each way between Vattakanal and Vellagavi

When to go: Best from October to March, after the monsoon, when streams run full and the air is clear. Expect rain and leeches from June to September, and hot afternoons in the foothills from April.
