About this trail

This is the ascending version of the Vellagavi crossing. You set off from Kumbakarai falls at the foot of the Palani hills and climb on rocky paths through hill savannah and coffee-growing slopes to Vellagavi, a small village where people traditionally walk barefoot. After a night in tents, with three meals included, the trail climbs on to Kodaikanal past viewpoints such as Dolphin's Nose. The one-way route is 14 km spread over about 12 hours of walking, graded tough because of the steep, sustained ascent. Leopards, Indian gaur and pythons live here, though birds are the likelier sightings. For fit trekkers who want a real climb.

Camp-stay trek, one way uphill: Kumbakarai to Kodaikanal via Vellagavi, 14 km

When to go: Best from October to March, after the monsoon, when streams run full and the air is clear. Expect rain and leeches from June to September, and hot afternoons in the foothills from April.
