About this trail

Within a day trip of Chennai, this trail leads through tropical dry evergreen scrub to the Gudiyam caves, natural rock shelters where Stone Age tools have been found. It is as much a history lesson as a trek: the guide explains how early people used the shelters, and the low hills around give a sense of the old landscape. The route is 4.5 km each way, around 4 hours, and graded easy, with a late-morning start. Expect monkeys and birds rather than large animals. Ideal for families, students and anyone curious about prehistory.

Out and back: 4.5 km each way

When to go: Best from November to February, when the hills are green after the north-east monsoon and the days are cool. From March to June the dry forest gets hot: start early and carry extra water.
