About This Experience

The Weavers' Street

Pillaiyarpalayam is Kanchipuram's oldest weaving quarter, and on most of its streets you hear the clack of the shuttle before you see a loom. Saravanan Kumaresan's family has woven here for three generations. The morning begins in his front room, where a pit loom is sunk into the floor so the weaver sits at ground level, legs in the pit, working the treadles with his feet.

From Silk Yarn to Zari

Before you touch the loom, Saravanan walks you through the raw materials: mulberry silk yarn, much of it bought from Karnataka's reeling centres, dyed in hanks and twisted for strength; and zari, a silver-cored thread coated in gold that gives a Kanchipuram saree its weight and gleam. You will see how the warp is stretched and starched, how jacquard punch cards carry motifs such as the mango, temple tower, peacock and rudraksham, and why a good saree can keep two weavers busy for anything from ten days to several weeks.

The Korvai Joint

The heart of the session is korvai, the interlocking technique that sets Kanchipuram silk apart. Border and body are woven in different colours, often by two weavers working together, and at the junction the weft threads are looped into one another so tightly that the border will not separate even if the saree tears. You will throw the shuttle, beat the weft with the reed and, with guidance, make a few korvai interlocks of your own on a practice warp.

Reading a Real Saree

The session ends over filter coffee with lessons every buyer should know: how to test zari with a gentle scrape, how to spot a korvai border from the reverse, and what the Kancheepuram Silk GI tag protects. There is no pressure to buy, but the family's finished sarees are available at weaver prices.

The craft and its maker

Saravanan Kumaresan · Devanga weaving community (Kanchipuram's silk weavers are largely Devanga and Saliyar families)
I am the third generation of my family to weave at this loom; my grandfather set up our first pit loom in Pillaiyarpalayam and taught my father the korvai joint. I still weave every border by hand, with my wife working the other side of the loom. Twenty years ago we wove a bride's saree, and last month her daughter wore it at her own wedding — the family sent us a photograph, and the border was still perfect.

Know before you go

You are a guest in a working home or workshop: looms, kilns and casting pits are someone's livelihood. Expect to sit on the floor or a low stool, and to get your hands dirty with clay, dye or gesso. Prices of finished pieces reflect weeks of work — buying directly from the maker is the best way to support the craft.

What to bring

  • Comfortable, loose clothing
  • Reading glasses if you use them
  • Cash or UPI if you plan to buy
  • Clothes you don't mind staining
  • A cloth bag or box to carry your piece home
  • Curiosity and patience
Local customs
Ask before photographing the artisan, their family or unfinished designs (some patterns are unique to a family). Do not touch looms, moulds or tools unless invited, and do not bargain hard — a fair price keeps the craft alive.
Accessibility
Pit-loom weaving is done seated at floor level with legs in the pit; a chair-height practice frame is available. Two steps at the house entrance.
