The long way south, never far from the sea. Begin in Chennai with Fort St. George, George Town, the Kapaleeshwarar temple and the San Thome basilica; follow the East Coast Road to the Pallava shore at Mamallapuram, Chidambaram's Nataraja temple and a night among the Pichavaram mangroves; then the old ports of Poompuhar and Danish Tranquebar, the dargah at Nagore and the basilica at Velankanni. A long drive brings you to the island temple of Rameswaram, and another to Kanyakumari, where the circuit ends at sunrise on the rock. Visiting all seven sacred shore sites inks the Sacred Shores trail in your Heritage Passport.
