Best season
November to February; mornings and late afternoons are best for photographs
Three temples built by the Chola kings between the early 11th and the 12th century are inscribed together by UNESCO as the Great Living Chola Temples, and all three are still places of worship: the Brihadeeswarar at Thanjavur (Rajaraja I), the temple of Gangaikonda Cholapuram (his son Rajendra I) and the Airavatesvara at Darasuram (Rajaraja II). Start at sunrise under the Thanjavur vimana, base yourself in Kumbakonam, walk Darasuram's sculpted mandapa with a guide and the bronze-casting town of Swamimalai, and end at Rajendra's capital. Visiting all three inks the Great Living Chola Temples trail in your Heritage Passport.
