About This Experience

The Chola Capital That Was

Gangaikonda Cholapuram — 'the city of the Chola who conquered the Ganges' — was built by Rajendra Chola I in the 1020s as his new capital, celebrating his military campaigns that reached the banks of the Ganges in north India. Today, the city is gone — only the great temple and a few scattered ruins remain in a quiet village surrounded by paddy fields. The contrast between the monument's imperial ambition and its rural setting is profoundly moving.

The Temple

The Brihadeeswarar Temple here (not to be confused with its namesake in Thanjavur) has a 55-metre vimana — slightly shorter than Thanjavur's but considered more refined in proportion. Part of the Great Living Chola Temples UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2004), it features some of the finest Chola bronze work and stone sculpture in existence.

Sculptural Highlights

Your guide draws attention to sculptures that most visitors miss: the exceptionally graceful Nataraja panel, the Saraswati with her veena, the Chandeswarar receiving the garland from Shiva (a scene commemorating Rajendra's devotion), and the lion-well — a monolithic stone trough in the shape of a lion used for temple rituals.

The Lost City

Walking through the fields around the temple, your guide points out traces of the vanished city: the embankment of the massive artificial lake (16 km long) that Rajendra built to commemorate his northern campaign, foundation stones of palaces, and fragments of the hydraulic system that sustained a capital of perhaps 100,000 people.

Know before you go

Most temples are living places of worship: dress modestly, remove footwear at the counter outside, and expect crowds and closed sanctums around midday. Photography is never allowed inside sanctums, and many temples now ask you to deposit phones. Each site's own rules are listed under its etiquette.

What to bring

  • Clothing that covers shoulders and knees (a dhoti, saree, churidar or long skirt is ideal)
  • A shawl or stole
  • Socks for hot stone floors
  • Small change for footwear and phone counters
Local customs
Dress code: Modest clothing. Remove footwear in the temple. Walk clockwise around shrines, keep your voice low near the sanctum, do not touch idols or priests, and follow the queue. Offerings are optional.
Accessibility
Mostly accessible. Open courtyard.

Visiting etiquette

Dress
Modest clothing is expected: shoulders and knees covered. Veshti/dhoti or trousers with a shirt for men, and saree, half-saree or churidar/salwar with dupatta for women are ideal; shorts, sleeveless tops and short skirts are best avoided.
Footwear
Remove footwear at the entrance to the temple complex; there is usually no formal counter, so leave it neatly by the gate. The granite courtyard gets very hot by noon.
Photography
Photography is allowed in the courtyard and of the exterior sculptures, but not inside the sanctum. As an ASI-protected UNESCO site, tripods and drones need prior written permission from the ASI.
Entry
Entry is free. It is an active temple conserved by the ASI; join devotees quietly for darshan of the great Lingam.
Timings
Open about 06:00–12:00 and 16:00–20:00; the sanctum is closed during the afternoon break, so time your darshan for the morning or evening.
Offerings
Flowers, coconuts and archana are offered through the priest, and a small donation for the archana is customary.
Behaviour
Please don't climb on the sculpted walls, the Nandi or the lion-headed well (Simha Kinaru); keep to the paths and keep the lawns litter-free. Stay quiet near the sanctum and walk around it clockwise.
