Mamallapuram (Covelong) has become Tamil Nadu's surfing capital over the past decade, with consistent waves, a sandy bottom, and a growing community of local surfers. The Shore Temple provides a spectacular backdrop as you learn to ride waves that have travelled across the Bay of Bengal.
Beginner lessons start with a beach briefing: wave reading, paddling technique, pop-up practice on sand, and ocean safety. You then enter the water with a foam longboard (stable and forgiving) and your instructor, who stays beside you in waist-deep water. Most beginners stand up on their first session. The lesson includes about 90 minutes of water time.
Mamallapuram's surf scene is unique — it grew organically from local fishermen's children who started riding waves on planks, inspired by visiting surfers. Your instructor is likely a local who learned to surf before he learned to swim (a common story here). Between waves, they share stories of how surfing has changed the village — from a fishing settlement to a community where young people see the ocean as opportunity, not just livelihood.
After the lesson, the group gathers at a beachside cafe for fresh lime soda and a debrief. The instructors share video clips from the session (shot on waterproof cameras) and provide feedback. Guests who want to continue can book follow-up sessions at a reduced rate.
