The story of this temple begins around the year 907, when Chola patronage started under the king Parantaka I. A century later, around 1000, Rajaraja Chola I led a major expansion that shaped much of what you see today. By about 1200, the four great gopurams were constructed, completing the temple's grand form. Through the centuries, the temple remained a living centre of worship. In 1649, disputes over its administration were recorded, and these debates continued for centuries. The matter reached the Supreme Court, which gave a ruling on temple governance in 2009. So, when you stand here, you are looking at a monument shaped by royal builders, priests and modern law.

Take a moment to look up. Four towering gopurams frame this temple, one at each direction, and each one is decorated with the 108 poses of Bharatanatyam. Together, they form a complete visual textbook of classical Tamil dance, sculpted in stone and stucco. The complex covers 40 acres, and you will walk barefoot across wide stone courtyards, just as pilgrims have done for centuries. As you move inward, you will pass through grand halls leading to the inner shrines. Keep an eye on the gopurams as you go, every figure is a dancer frozen mid-step, a delight for anyone who loves movement and craft.

The heart of this temple is the Chidambara Rahasyam, the famous secret of Chidambaram. In the innermost sanctum, there is a curtain embroidered with golden vilva leaves. Behind it, there is no idol, only empty space, representing akasha, the formless ether. The message is philosophical, that the divine itself is beyond form. Surrounding this mystery is the great legend of Nataraja's cosmic dance, the Ananda Tandavam, symbolising five acts, creation, preservation, destruction, concealment and grace. The image of Shiva dancing within a ring of fire, with one foot pressing down ignorance, became one of India's most recognised symbols, originating right here.

A few simple guidelines will help you enjoy your visit. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. Men are usually asked to remove their shirts before entering the inner Kanaka Sabha, so a veshti with an upper cloth is ideal. Leave your footwear at the stands outside each gopuram, the stone courtyards are walked barefoot. Photography is not allowed in the Chit Sabha and Kanaka Sabha, or during pujas, so please follow the signs. Entry is free, though a small fee lets you stand closer at the Kanaka Sabha. The temple opens from 06:00 to 12:00 and again from 16:00 to 21:00. Keep your voice low, walk clockwise around shrines, and follow the Dikshitar priests' instructions with a smile.

Sign in to collectThe Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram is unique in Hindu temple architecture — it is the only temple where the primary deity is Shiva in his form as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance. The Nataraja's cosmic dance (Ananda Tandavam) represents the five divine acts of creation, preservation, destruction, concealment, and grace. The iconic image of Nataraja — dancing within a circle of flames, one foot crushing the demon of ignorance — originates from this temple and has become one of the most recognized symbols of India worldwide.
The temple's innermost sanctum contains the Chidambara Rahasyam (the secret of Chidambaram) — a curtain embroidered with gold vilva leaves, behind which there is... nothing. Or rather, there is akasha (space/ether), the fifth element. The 'secret' is that the divine is formless — a philosophical statement encoded in architecture that has been debated by scholars and devotees for a millennium.
The temple covers 40 acres and features four towering gopurams, each depicting the 108 poses of Bharatanatyam — a complete visual textbook of classical Tamil dance. The temple is uniquely administered not by the government but by a community of Brahmin priests called Dikshitars, who claim descent from the 3,000 devotees present at Nataraja's original cosmic dance. This community management has been both praised for preserving traditions and contested in lengthy legal battles.
