Welcome, and come closer. You are standing at the very heart of Mylapore, the oldest part of Chennai. Behind me rises a gopuram thirty seven metres tall, covered in brightly painted stucco figures. This is the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, dedicated to Shiva, known here as Kapaleeshwarar, lord of skulls, and to his consort Karpagambal. You are standing in a place that has been sacred for well over a thousand years. Over the next few short chapters, I will walk you through its history, its architecture, the stories that surround it, and how to visit with respect. Take a breath, look up at the tower, and let us begin.

The story of this temple begins around the year 700, when the Shaivite saints Tirugnanasambandar and Appar sang hymns about a shrine to Shiva here on the coast. That earlier temple was lost, possibly destroyed during Portuguese activity around 1566. Around 1600, the temple was rebuilt in its present inland location in the Vijayanagara style, and it has been the beating heart of Mylapore ever since. The great gopuram you see above you was renovated in 1906, and in 2019 the sacred tank was carefully restored. So the stones you touch today carry within them more than a thousand years of prayer, loss, and renewal.

Look up first. The gopuram rises thirty seven metres, tier upon tier, crowded with painted figures of gods, demons and dancers, all rendered in stucco. Pass through its base and you enter a cool stone courtyard ringed with smaller shrines and pillared mandapams. Walk towards the back of the temple and you will find Kapali Theertham, the temple tank, which still holds water all year round. The main sanctum holds the lingam of Kapaleeshwarar, while a separate shrine is dedicated to Karpagambal. Notice how the spaces move you inwards, from the bright outer street, through the shaded tower, towards the quiet, lamp-lit inner rooms. Every level lowers the noise and the light.

Mylapore itself takes its name from Mayilapore, the town of peacocks, and even today you will see peacocks carved into pillars and painted on the walls. The temple's oldest legends reach us through the Thevaram hymns of the 7th century, sung by Appar and Sambandar, who praised Shiva here long before the present building existed. Each year in March or April, the Arubathimoovar festival brings sixty three figures of the Nayanar saints in a great procession through Mylapore, a celebration that draws hundreds of thousands of devotees and fills these streets with music, flowers and colour. It is one of the most stirring sights in all of Chennai.

A few simple rules will help you feel at ease. Please dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. Sarees, half sarees or churidars for women, and a veshti or trousers with a shirt for men, are ideal. Leave your footwear at the stalls near the gopuram and walk barefoot inside. The temple opens from five thirty in the morning until around nine thirty at night, with a rest in the afternoon. Entry is free, though paid special darshan tickets are sold. Only Hindus may enter the inner sanctums; all visitors may walk the courtyard and visit the tank. Camera phones are not allowed inside, so deposit yours at the counter for a small fee. Walk clockwise, speak softly near the sanctum, and enjoy this ancient place with care.

Sign in to collectThe Kapaleeshwarar Temple is the spiritual centre of Mylapore, Chennai's oldest and most culturally significant neighbourhood. Dedicated to Shiva (as Kapaleeshwarar, 'lord of skulls') and his consort Karpagambal, the temple is believed to have originally stood on the shore — the original site was destroyed or submerged (possibly during Portuguese colonial activity in the 16th century), and the current temple was rebuilt at the present inland location.
The temple's origins are ancient — the 7th-century Shaivite saints Tirugnanasambandar and Appar composed hymns about it — but the current structure is primarily Vijayanagara-era (16th century). The 37-metre gopuram, richly decorated with stucco figures, dominates the Mylapore skyline.
Mylapore derives its name from Mayilapore ('town of peacocks'). It was a thriving port and cultural centre long before the British founded Madras. The streets around the temple are some of the oldest continuously inhabited in India, and the neighbourhood retains a distinct character: Brahmin agraharams, flower markets, silk shops, and the filter-coffee houses that define Chennai's morning culture.
The temple tank (Kapali Theertham) is one of the few temple tanks in Chennai that still holds water year-round. The annual Arubathimoovar festival — a nine-day celebration in March-April featuring a procession of 63 Nayanar saints on a decorated chariot — draws hundreds of thousands of devotees and is one of Chennai's most spectacular public events.
