About this trail

Starting at the Parsons Valley trekking shed in the upper Nilgiris, this route heads deep into Mukurthi National Park to Mukurthi Hut, an isolated building that dates back to colonial times. At around 2,500 m the landscape alternates between dense shola in the folds of the hills, open downs of grass, and older plantations of exotic trees. It is 10 km each way and takes about 8 hours, graded tough mainly for its length and the changeable weather. This is one of the wildest corners of the Nilgiris: tigers, leopards, sambar, Indian gaur, Nilgiri langurs, wild dogs, barking deer, wild boar and porcupines all live here. For fit, experienced trekkers.

Out and back: 10 km each way

When to go: Best from October to May. The south-west monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain, leeches and occasional closures, and winter mornings on the high grasslands can be close to freezing.
