About this trail

The Gene Pool trail starts at the eco-tourism centre on the Kerala border below the Nilgiris, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The path moves between grassland and shola forest at around 940 m, where the air stays damp and mild. It is 4 km each way, about 4 hours at a relaxed pace, and graded easy. Elephants, sambar deer and wild dogs (dholes) use this forest, so the guide will keep the group together and quiet. Suitable for families and first-time trekkers travelling via Gudalur.

Out and back: 4 km each way

When to go: Best from October to May. The south-west monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain, leeches and occasional closures, and winter mornings on the high grasslands can be close to freezing.

Rules and safety

  1. Trek only with a booking made on Trek Tamil Nadu; entering forest areas without a permit is not allowed.
  2. Reach the reception point a little early with the ID you booked with.
  3. Walk with the Forest Department guide, keep to the path and stay with the group; no short cuts.
