Welcome to the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, often called the Toy Train to the Hills. I am so glad you are here, about to ride one of the steepest heritage railways in Asia. Imagine a small blue and cream train chugging slowly up a mountain, hissing steam, winding through tunnels and over bridges. This is a 46-kilometre journey from Mettupalayam, at 326 metres, to Ooty, high up at 2,203 metres. Built between 1899 and 1908, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2005. Over the next few minutes, I will tell you its history, its clever engineering, the stories it carries, and how to enjoy the ride with care.

The idea of a railway into the Nilgiris goes all the way back to 1854. But it took decades before construction actually began in 1891. The Madras Railway Company pushed tracks slowly up the steep escarpment, and the first section, from Mettupalayam to Coonoor, finally opened in 1899. Work continued for nearly another decade, and the line reached Ooty in 1908. In 2005, the railway was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, joining two other famous mountain lines in India. Today, century-old Swiss steam locomotives still haul the steepest section, taking about 4.5 hours one way. The history you are riding through was shaped by Victorian-era ambition, hard manual labour, and a long-held dream of reaching the cool hills.

What makes this railway special is its rack-and-pinion system, called the Abt system. Two toothed rails sit between the regular tracks, and a cog wheel on the locomotive locks into them, allowing the train to climb gradients steeper than 1 in 12. Along the 46-kilometre route, you will pass through 16 tunnels and cross over 250 bridges, many curved to follow the mountain. The altitude gain is 1,877 metres. The steam locomotives themselves, the X class from 1952 and the oil-fired versions of the 1920s engines, are part of the architecture you are riding in. Look out for deep ravines, stone viaducts, and the sudden shift from tropical forest to the open tea gardens of the Nilgiris.

Every mountain railway gathers its own stories, and the Nilgiri line is no different. The real legend here is the line itself: a Victorian dream of escaping the Madras heat to the cool hill station of Ooty, brought to life by blasting tunnels through hard rock and balancing curved viaducts across deep gorges, all by hand. The journey is woven into local life too. Hillgrove and Coonoor stations are small living places where vendors sell tea and snacks, and the daily 07:10 departure from Mettupalayam is itself a tradition. Travellers speak of the mist rising through the forests, the sudden whistle echoing in tunnels, and the thrill of a steam engine still working hard, exactly as it did over a hundred years ago.

A few simple things will make your ride smoother and more respectful. There is no dress code, but dress in layers, as it is warm at Mettupalayam and cool, sometimes misty, up at Coonoor and Ooty. Wear comfortable shoes, and mind the high platform and coach steps when boarding. Reserved seats are booked on IRCTC, up to 60 days ahead, and photo ID matching the booking is needed. Train 56136 leaves Mettupalayam daily at 07:10, reaching Ooty around 12:00. The return, 56137, leaves Ooty around 14:00. Photography is welcome, but please do not lean out of doors or windows, and drones need permission. The Nilgiris ban single-use plastics, so carry a refillable bottle, keep hands inside the coach, and never litter the forest slopes.

The Toy Train to the Hills

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is a 46-kilometre heritage railway that climbs from Mettupalayam (326 m) to Ooty (2,203 m) through 16 tunnels and over 250 bridges, ascending nearly 1,900 metres. Built between 1899 and 1908 by the Madras Railway Company, it uses a unique rack-and-pinion system on the steepest section (Mettupalayam to Coonoor) — one of the few surviving rack railways in Asia.

The NMR was inscribed as part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, joining the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Kalka-Shimla Railway.

The Steam Section

The Mettupalayam-Coonoor section (the steepest) is still operated by Swiss-built 'X' class steam locomotives from 1952 and oil-fired versions of the original 1920s locos. The journey takes about 4.5 hours (one way) and is one of India's most scenic rail experiences: the train climbs through tropical forest, crosses bridges over deep ravines, plunges into tunnels, and emerges into the tea gardens of the Nilgiris.

Engineering Achievement

The rack-and-pinion system (Abt system, with two parallel toothed rails) was necessary because the gradient exceeds 1-in-12 in places — far too steep for adhesion alone. The engineering challenges of building a railway up the Nilgiri escarpment in the 1890s — blasting tunnels through hard rock, building curved viaducts across gorges, all with manual labour — were immense. The railway took nearly a decade to complete and remains a monument to Victorian-era engineering ambition.

Visiting etiquette

Dress
No dress code. Dress in layers, since it's warm at Mettupalayam and cool, sometimes misty, at Coonoor and Ooty.
Footwear
Any comfortable footwear works; station platforms and coach steps can be high, so take care boarding.
Photography
Photos from the train and at the stations are part of the joy. Please don't lean out of doors or windows for shots, and flying drones over the track or stations needs permission.
Entry
Reserved seats are booked on IRCTC (60 days ahead; first-class seats are very limited and sell out fast), and you need photo ID matching the booking. A small number of unreserved tickets are sold at the station.
Timings
Train 56136 departs Mettupalayam daily at 07:10 and reaches Ooty around 12:00 via Coonoor. The return, 56137, leaves Ooty around 14:00, and boarding starts well before departure.
Offerings
No offerings are expected; support the small vendors at stations like Hillgrove and Coonoor instead.
Behaviour
The Nilgiris enforces a court-ordered ban on single-use plastics, including small PET water bottles, so carry a refillable bottle. Keep hands and heads inside the coach and don't litter the forest slopes.
