Perched on a hillside above Kotagiri's tea gardens, this eco-cottage is built with rammed earth and local stone in the style of traditional Nilgiri dwellings. The thick walls keep the interior cool by day and retain warmth at night — important at 2,000 metres altitude where winter temperatures drop to 5 degrees Celsius. The cottage has one bedroom with a wood-burning fireplace, a small sitting area with books and board games, and a bathroom with solar-heated water.
The views from the cottage veranda stretch across tea estates to the Moyar gorge, where the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve's dry forests begin. On clear mornings, you can see the plains of Mysore far below. The property includes a small organic vegetable garden and a fruit orchard with plums, peaches, and gooseberries.
Breakfast is served on the veranda: seasonal fruit, eggs from the property's chickens, fresh bread, and Nilgiri tea. Dinner is a home-cooked meal featuring organic vegetables from the garden, local greens, and hill specialties like bamboo shoot curry and wild-mushroom stew (in season). All meals are included.
Several trails leave from the property: a two-hour walk to the nearest shola-grassland ecosystem (the unique montane habitat of the Nilgiris), a path to a waterfall through tea estates, and a longer hike to a Toda settlement. The hosts provide basic trail maps and can arrange a guide. Birding is excellent — the Nilgiri laughingthrush, endemic to these hills, is commonly sighted on the property.
