This 1890s Chettiar mansion in Kanadukathan has been restored over five years by a family descendant who returned from Singapore to preserve the ancestral home. The result is a functioning heritage stay that retains the mansion's original character: Athangudi tiles in geometric patterns, Burma teak pillars three stories high, Belgian glass windows, and Italian marble thresholds.
Guest rooms open onto the main courtyard — a large, airy space that functions as the mansion's living room, dining room, and social hub. Each room has a four-poster teak bed, handwoven cotton linens, ceiling fan, and attached bathroom with modern plumbing discreetly installed behind original tile work. The rooms are vast by modern standards — the Chettiars built for joint families and did not economize on space.
Meals are served on a long wooden table in the courtyard or on banana leaves on the floor (your choice). The Chettinad food is the real thing: pepper chicken, prawn masala, meen kulambu, idiappam, and the full range of accompaniments. A Chettinad meal is not a single dish — it is a production, and the mansion's cook treats every meal as a performance.
After dinner, the host leads a short walk through the village under the stars — Kanadukathan has virtually no light pollution. The mansions loom ghostly and grand against the night sky, and the host tells stories of the great merchant families, their ships, and the fortunes made and lost across the Bay of Bengal.
