About this trail

Longwood Shola is a surviving block of montane wet temperate forest right on the edge of Kotagiri, kept intact largely thanks to local residents. The 1.5 km trail stays under a closed canopy, crossing small streams and soggy hollows, and is one of the easiest places in the Nilgiris to see shola birds up close. The return walk is 3 km and takes about 2 hours, with several start times through the morning. Sambar, barking deer, Indian gaur, wild boar, junglefowl and porcupines live here, and sloth bears and wild dogs pass through. Easy enough for families.

Out and back: 1.5 km each way

When to go: Best from October to May. The south-west monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain, leeches and occasional closures, and winter mornings on the high grasslands can be close to freezing.
