About this trail

Cairn Hill is a forested knoll on the edge of Ooty, and this walk begins at its interpretation centre. For 3 km, one way, the trail threads through a 19th-century cypress plantation that has grown into a tall, mossy forest, with native shola trees mixed in; expect it to be a few degrees colder than town. Look out for the rope bridge and the old watchtower from British times. It takes about 2 hours and is graded easy. Sambar deer, Indian gaur and Nilgiri langurs live here, and tigers and leopards pass through the wider landscape. An easy half-day for families staying in Ooty.

One way: 3 km, about 2 hours

When to go: Best from October to May. The south-west monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain, leeches and occasional closures, and winter mornings on the high grasslands can be close to freezing.
