Chettinad, the home of the Nagarathar merchant community, is known for its vast courtyard mansions and one of India's great regional cuisines. On the way from Madurai, stop at Keeladi, where excavations by the state archaeology department have uncovered a Sangam-age town, and its museum. Then spend two nights in a restored mansion near Karaikudi: a morning in a home kitchen learning Chettinad spice blends, an afternoon among the mansions of Kanadukathan, and a guided walk through the lanes before heading north past the hill fort of Thirumayam and the painted Jain cave of Sittanavasal to Tiruchirappalli.
