About this trail

Setting out from the Topslip reception centre in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, this route takes in Karian Shola, one of the reserve's best-known stretches of tall forest, before climbing to grassy slopes at around 1,280 m. A couple of streams need to be crossed on the way. It is 4 km each way, around 4 hours, and graded moderate. Topslip is rich wildlife country: Indian gaur, elephants, spotted and barking deer, sloth bears and tigers all live here, and the birdlife is excellent. Suits fit beginners and regular walkers.

Out and back: 4 km each way

When to go: Best from October to March, after the monsoon, when streams run full and the air is clear. Expect rain and leeches from June to September, and hot afternoons in the foothills from April.
