About this trail

This trek sets out from Sembukarai, a small tribal settlement in the hills outside Coimbatore, and heads for Perumal Mudi, a bald granite top at around 1,530 m that local people regard as sacred. The lower slopes are dry deciduous forest; higher up, semi-evergreen trees take over before the last section on bare rock. From the top you can see across the Coimbatore plains to the main Western Ghats ranges. It is 5 km each way and takes about 6 hours, graded moderate. Elephants use these slopes, and birdlife is good. Suitable for reasonably fit walkers who are comfortable on rock.

Out and back: 5 km each way

When to go: Best from October to March, after the monsoon, when streams run full and the air is clear. Expect rain and leeches from June to September, and hot afternoons in the foothills from April.
