About this trail

Rockwood Peak rises above the Gudalur side of the Nilgiris, and the trail to it is short but steep. You climb over open grassy ridges and through shola pockets, often with cloud and drizzle drifting in from Kerala, to a summit at about 1,530 m that looks out over the Mudumalai and Moyar side of the hills. The route is 6 km in total and takes about 5 hours because of the gradient; it is graded moderate. Elephants, sambar deer, leopards and wild dogs range across these slopes. Suited to fit walkers with good knees and some trekking experience.

Return trek: 6 km in total

When to go: Best from October to May. The south-west monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain, leeches and occasional closures, and winter mornings on the high grasslands can be close to freezing.
