About this trail

Rangasamy Peak is a landmark of the eastern Nilgiris, well beyond Kotagiri, and this trail reaches it from the trekking shed at Karikaiyur. You climb through moist deciduous forest into shola and open grassland, reaching about 2,000 m, where the top looks out over forested ridges and valleys. The route is 4 km each way, around 4 hours, and graded moderate because of the sustained ascent. Elephants, tigers, wild boar and hares live in this landscape, and birdlife is varied. Suits fit beginners and regular hikers.

Out and back: 4 km each way

When to go: Best from October to May. The south-west monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain, leeches and occasional closures, and winter mornings on the high grasslands can be close to freezing.
