About this trail

The middle option of the three Kalikesam treks, Balamore starts with a river crossing beside the eco-camp. From there you climb steadily under high canopy, where the guide can point out plants found only in this southern tip of the Western Ghats, until the forest gives way to the Balamore estate, an old plantation of cloves, coffee and spices. Views from the upper section reach across the Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary. The return trek is 14 km, about 6 hours, graded moderate. Birds are the main wildlife interest. Longer than Maramalai, shorter than Injikadavu.

Return trek: 14 km in total

When to go: Best from October to March, after the monsoon, when streams run full and the air is clear. Expect rain and leeches from June to September, and hot afternoons in the foothills from April.
