This 1920s cottage was built for a coffee-estate foreman and has been lovingly maintained by the host family, who acquired it in the 1960s. Set on half an acre of coffee and orange trees, it has wide verandas, terracotta-tiled roofs, and the unmistakable smell of old wood and coffee blossoms. Two guest rooms are available, each with attached bathroom, period furniture, and windows overlooking the garden.
Yercaud is Tamil Nadu's most underrated hill station — small, quiet, and unbothered by mass tourism. The homestay matches this pace. Mornings start with estate coffee on the veranda, watching mist lift from the valley. The host, a retired schoolteacher, is an avid birder who can guide you to the best spots on the property — over 80 species have been recorded here.
The host's wife is an exceptional cook. Breakfast features filter coffee, idli, dosa, and seasonal fruit. Lunch and dinner are traditional Salem-district fare: kambu (pearl millet) koozh, drumstick sambar, greens from the garden, and her specialty — a pepper rasam made with estate pepper that will clear every sinus in your head.
The homestay is a short drive from Yercaud Lake, the Kiliyur Falls viewpoint, and the Lady's Seat — but the point of staying here is to stay. Read, walk through coffee rows, talk to the hosts, and watch the evening sun turn the Shevaroy slopes golden.
