About this trail

This is the longer of the two Shenbagathoppu walks above Srivilliputhur. Starting from the forest range office, it follows the same mix of dry deciduous and riverine forest as the easy route but carries on twice as far, giving more time in the quieter interior of the Srivilliputhur–Megamalai Tiger Reserve. Expect 10 km in total and about 5 hours on the trail, graded moderate. These forests form a wildlife corridor towards Megamalai, and elephants, Indian gaur, spotted deer and many birds live here. Suits walkers with reasonable fitness who want a fuller day.

Return trek: 10 km in total

When to go: Best from October to March, after the monsoon, when streams run full and the air is clear. Expect rain and leeches from June to September, and hot afternoons in the foothills from April.
