Tranquebar (Tharangambadi — 'place of the singing waves') is a tiny coastal town with an outsized history. In 1620, Danish traders established a colony here, building Fort Dansborg, churches, warehouses, and a grid of streets that still carry Danish names. It was the first Protestant mission in India: the Zion Church (1701) is where the first Tamil translation of the Bible was printed.
The walk begins at Fort Dansborg, a well-preserved Danish fort that now houses a museum. Your guide recounts the unlikely story of Denmark's colonial ambitions in India — a small European power that held this outpost for 225 years before selling it to the British in 1845. The fort's bastions offer views of the coast where the 2004 tsunami struck with devastating force.
Walking through Tranquebar's streets is like entering a time capsule: colourful Danish-era houses with Tamil families living in them, a crumbling Governor's bungalow being restored, and the New Jerusalem Church with its distinctive square tower. Your guide explains the complex cultural layering: Danish architecture, Tamil domestic life, and the legacy of the first Tamil printing press.
The walk ends at the beach, where a Tamil memorial marks the 2004 tsunami's impact. Tranquebar lost 800 of its 6,000 residents. The guide discusses the town's recovery and the ongoing restoration efforts that aim to preserve this unique Indo-Danish heritage.

Most temples are living places of worship: dress modestly, remove footwear at the counter outside, and expect crowds and closed sanctums around midday. Photography is never allowed inside sanctums, and many temples now ask you to deposit phones. Each site's own rules are listed under its etiquette.
