Kanchipuram — one of India's seven sacred cities — was the capital of the Pallava dynasty and later a major centre of the Cholas, Vijayanagara rulers, and the Nawabs of the Carnatic. It remains a living temple city: over 100 active temples within the town, and a thriving handloom silk industry that produces India's most prestigious sarees.
Built by Narasimhavarman II around 700 CE, the Kailasanathar Temple is the oldest structure in Kanchipuram and one of the earliest examples of Dravidian architecture in stone (earlier temples were largely brick). Your guide explains the temple's significance as a transitional monument — from rock-cut to structural — and draws your attention to the sandstone sculptures that show Pallava art at its most refined. The circumambulatory passage contains 58 miniature shrines, each with distinct sculptures.
From the temple, you walk to the weaving quarter where families have produced Kanchipuram silk for generations. You enter a weaver's home and sit beside the loom as the master weaver demonstrates the interlocking technique — korvai — that joins the contrasting body and border of a Kanchipuram saree. Each saree takes 15-45 days to complete. The weaver explains how natural dyes are giving way to chemical ones, and the economics of a craft where a weaver earns far less than the retail price suggests.
The walk continues to the Ekambareswarar Temple, one of the five Pancha Bhuta Sthalas (temples representing the five elements; this one represents earth). The temple's mango tree is said to be 3,500 years old — each branch bears a different variety of mango fruit.

Most temples are living places of worship: dress modestly, remove footwear at the counter outside, and expect crowds and closed sanctums around midday. Photography is never allowed inside sanctums, and many temples now ask you to deposit phones. Each site's own rules are listed under its etiquette.
