About This Experience

The Merchant Princes

The Nattukottai Chettiars were Tamil Nadu's premier merchant-banking community, financing trade across Burma, Malaya, Singapore, and Ceylon from the 18th to mid-20th century. With their overseas wealth, they built extraordinary mansions in the dry plains of Sivaganga district — palatial homes with Belgian chandeliers, Burmese teak pillars, Italian marble floors, and handmade Athangudi tiles.

Kanadukathan

The walk begins in Kanadukathan, the grandest of the Chettinad villages. You enter two restored mansions — one now a heritage hotel, one still family-occupied — and see the typical layout: a long corridor leading to a series of courtyards, each ringed by rooms with carved wooden doors. The scale is breathtaking: some mansions have 100+ rooms, built for joint families of 50+ members.

Athangudi Tiles

In Athangudi, you visit a tile workshop where the distinctive hand-poured cement tiles — with geometric and floral patterns in vivid colours — are still made using a 150-year-old technique. No kiln is used; the cement sets naturally. You watch the process from pattern plate to finished tile.

The Decline & Revival

Your guide tells the story of Chettinad's decline — the Chettiars' overseas assets were nationalized after independence in Burma and elsewhere, and the community dispersed to Chennai, Singapore, and Mumbai. Many mansions were dismantled and sold for their teak and tiles. Today, a heritage revival is underway, with several mansions converted to boutique hotels and a growing awareness of this unique architectural legacy.

Know before you go

Most temples are living places of worship: dress modestly, remove footwear at the counter outside, and expect crowds and closed sanctums around midday. Photography is never allowed inside sanctums, and many temples now ask you to deposit phones. Each site's own rules are listed under its etiquette.

What to bring

  • Clothing that covers shoulders and knees (a dhoti, saree, churidar or long skirt is ideal)
  • A shawl or stole
  • Socks for hot stone floors
  • Small change for footwear and phone counters
Local customs
Dress code: Comfortable walking shoes. Walk clockwise around shrines, keep your voice low near the sanctum, do not touch idols or priests, and follow the queue. Offerings are optional.
Accessibility
Mostly accessible.

Visiting etiquette

Dress
No dress code, but modest clothing is appreciated, as these are family homes in a traditional community.
Footwear
Footwear is usually removed before entering a mansion's inner halls; follow the caretaker's lead.
Photography
Photographing facades from the street is fine. Inside, ask first: some houses charge for cameras or don't allow DSLR or professional shoots, and never photograph residents or family functions without consent.
Entry
Most mansions are private homes, so enter only where a caretaker invites you or a heritage house is open for a fee (often ₹50–100). The Chettinad Palace at Kanadukathan is generally viewed from outside only.
Timings
Heritage hotels welcome their guests round the clock; private mansions are visited by arrangement, usually in daylight hours. Houses may close when the owning family is in residence for weddings or festivals.
Offerings
No offerings are expected. Buying Athangudi tiles, Kandangi saris or local crafts directly from makers is a lovely way to support the community.
Behaviour
Speak softly, as people live here. Don't touch antiques, climb closed staircases or wander into private rooms, and respect 'no entry' signs.
