About this trail

Guthirayan is the top of the Melagiri hills, and reaching it from the Aiyur eco-tourism centre is a proper workout. The trail climbs through dry mixed deciduous forest, bamboo brakes and moister patches higher up, gaining height steadily to about 1,400 m, where the summit opens out over the surrounding ranges. It is 5.5 km each way, about 6 hours, and graded tough, with an early 7 am start. Elephants, Indian gaur, spotted deer and wild boar live in these hills, along with many birds and butterflies. Best for fit, experienced trekkers.

Out and back: 5.5 km each way

When to go: Best from November to February, when the hills are green after the north-east monsoon and the days are cool. From March to June the dry forest gets hot: start early and carry extra water.
