At Hogenakkal the Kaveri enters Tamil Nadu and crashes through carbonatite rocks — the name means 'smoking rocks' in Kannada. The round coracles (parisal) are woven from bamboo and sealed underneath, and the oarsmen of Hogenakkal have rowed them for generations. One coracle carries up to four adults and one child. The short ride goes to the falls viewpoints (about 45 minutes); the long ride continues downstream to the sandbanks (about 1 hour 30 minutes). Rides run only when the district administration permits — during heavy releases from upstream dams they are suspended and tickets are refunded. Life jackets are compulsory.
