Festival of Lord Murugan on the Pusam star in Thai; lakhs of pilgrims walk to the Palani hill temple carrying kavadi and milk pots.
Thaipusam day. The temple announces the festival schedule (flag hoisting, chariot) closer to the date.
Thaipusam falls on the day the moon is in the Pusam (Pushya) star in the Tamil month of Thai, usually near the full moon. It honours Lord Murugan, and the Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple at Palani, one of Murugan's six abodes (Arupadai Veedu), sees one of its largest gatherings of the year.
In the weeks before, devotees observe a fast and many walk to Palani on foot from Madurai, Coimbatore, Karaikudi and beyond, in saffron or green clothes. They carry a kavadi (a decorated arch on a pole), pots of milk (paal kudam) or other offerings, and some take vows of body piercing. Kavadi dancers move to nadaswaram and drums along the roads and around the hill.
The temple's ten-day festival opens with a flag hoisting in the town; on Thaipusam day the deity is taken to the Shanmuga river and the temple car is pulled through the streets around the hill. Pilgrims climb about 690 steps or use the winch and ropeway to reach the hilltop shrine.
Thaipusam is also observed at Murugan temples across Tamil Nadu, including Thiruchendur, Swamimalai and Thiruparankundram.
