About This Experience

The Agraharam

Thanjavur's agraharams — the Brahmin streets flanking the temple — have preserved a unique culinary tradition that blends Tamil and Marathi cooking, a legacy of the Maratha rulers who governed Thanjavur from 1674 to 1855. In one such narrow street, barely a hundred metres from the Big Temple, your host Selvi opens her family home for a vegetarian sadhya that tells this story through food.

The Temple Connection

The experience begins with a walk to the Brihadeeswarar Temple for the morning puja. You observe the preparation of prasadam — the sacred food offering — and learn about the temple's ancient inscriptions that detail food endowments, listing exact quantities of rice, ghee, curd and spices allocated to feed pilgrims a thousand years ago.

The Feast

Back at the house, the banana-leaf sadhya is served in the traditional sequence: pickle and papad on the far left, vegetables in the upper row, rice in the centre, sambar, rasam, and buttermilk served in succession. Thanjavur-specific dishes include vada curry (a soupy mutton-replacement for vegetarians), sakkarai pongal with the temple's own ghee style, and Maratha-influenced puran poli.

Stories & Sweets

After the meal, over coffee and Thanjavur-style sukku coffee (dry ginger coffee), Selvi shares family stories and the history of Thanjavur's culinary identity — how a Marathi court, Tamil soil, and temple patronage created a cuisine unlike any other.
