Hogenakkal — 'smoking rocks' in Kannada — is where the Cauvery River plunges through a granite gorge in a series of waterfalls and rapids before spreading across the Tamil Nadu plains. The landscape is dramatic: carbonatite rock formations (among the oldest on Earth), multiple cascading falls, and deep pools of green water.
The parisai (coracle) is a circular boat made of woven bamboo and waterproofed with tar — a design unchanged for centuries. Local boatmen navigate these through the rapids and pools below the falls with astonishing skill. The ride takes you close to the base of several falls, through narrow channels between rocks, and into calm pools where you can swim. The sensation of spinning through rapids in a vessel with no keel is unlike anything in conventional rafting.
At designated safe pools (checked daily by the boatmen), you can swim in the Cauvery's cool waters and, for the adventurous, jump from low rock ledges (3-5 metres) into deep pools. The boatman supervises all jumps and knows the water depth at every point — these families have worked this river for generations.
After the ride, a riverside meal is prepared: freshly caught river fish (if available) fried with turmeric and chilli, or a vegetarian alternative of tomato rice and vazhakkai (raw banana) fry. The meal is cooked on rocks by the water, eaten with your hands, and accompanied by the sound of the falls.
Life jackets are mandatory for all coracle passengers. The guides are experienced river boatmen with generations of knowledge of the Cauvery's currents. The experience does not operate during peak monsoon (July-August) when water levels are dangerously high.
