Gingee (Senji) Fort sprawls across three rocky hills — Krishnagiri, Rajagiri, and Chandrayandurg — connected by a 6-kilometre wall. Called the 'Troy of the East' by the French, it changed hands between the Cholas, Vijayanagara Empire, Marathas, Mughals, French, and British. Each layer of conquest left its mark on the architecture.
The trek to Rajagiri (the tallest and most dramatic of the three hills) takes about 45 minutes of steep climbing on rock-cut steps. At the summit: a Vijayanagara-era audience hall, grain stores carved into rock, a sacred pond, and a panoramic view of the surrounding plains that explains why every army wanted this fortress. Your guide, a local historian, narrates the fort's most dramatic chapters: Shivaji's conquest, the Mughal siege, and the French occupation under Dupleix.
After descending Rajagiri, you explore Krishnagiri — the lower hill with the Kalyana Mahal (wedding hall), a Vijayanagara-era gymnasium, and a series of stone granaries. The architecture here mixes Hindu and Islamic elements, reflecting the fort's layered history.
Your guide goes beyond military history to discuss the fort's civil life: the town that thrived within the walls, the water-harvesting systems, the temple inscriptions that record donations by soldiers and merchants, and the role of Gingee as a refuge for Maratha resistance against Mughal expansion.

Most temples are living places of worship: dress modestly, remove footwear at the counter outside, and expect crowds and closed sanctums around midday. Photography is never allowed inside sanctums, and many temples now ask you to deposit phones. Each site's own rules are listed under its etiquette.
