Kanchipuram silk saris are handwoven from pure mulberry silk and zari (silver thread gilded with gold). The body and border are usually woven separately and interlocked by the korvai technique, so firmly that the border will not come away even if the sari tears. Motifs such as temple towers, mangoes, peacocks and checks draw on the temples of this ancient city, and the weave has been a registered Geographical Indication since 2005.
