Kandangi is the heavy handwoven cotton saree of Chettinad, woven in and around Karaikudi in Sivaganga district. It is recognised by bold checks and stripes in strong, contrasting colours and by unusually broad contrast borders, and was traditionally worn by Chettiar women. Kandangi Sarees were registered as a Geographical Indication in 2019, with a Karaikudi handloom weavers' co-operative society as the applicant.
