Faiths of the Coromandel shore

சோழமண்டலக் கடற்கரையின் சமய நல்லிணக்கம்

Four days where Hindu, Muslim and Christian pilgrims share one coast: Tranquebar, Poompuhar, Nagore, Velankanni and Rameswaram.

Duration
4 days · 3 nights
Start → end
Tranquebar → Madurai
Pace
Moderate pace
Best season
November to March; the Velankanni feast (late August to 8 September) and the Nagore Kanduri festival draw huge crowds
On a short stretch of the Kaveri delta coast, a Danish fort and Lutheran church at Tranquebar, the dargah of Nagore and the basilica of Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni stand within an hour of each other, and pilgrims of every faith visit all three. This circuit adds the ancient Chola port of Poompuhar and ends at the Ramanathaswamy temple on the island of Rameswaram. A local guide takes you to Nagore and Velankanni on a single day with time for the dargah's evening prayers. Each site you visit adds a stamp to the Sacred Shores trail in your Heritage Passport.
