About This Experience

Three shrines, one coast

Within about 15 km of Nagapattinam stand three of Tamil Nadu's most visited shrines, each drawing pilgrims of every faith. This day with a local host, who grew up between them, is about how people actually worship here, and about the stories and offerings that cross religious lines.

The day

We begin in the morning at Nagore Dargah, the tomb of the 16th-century Sufi saint Shahul Hameed, with its five minarets and the pigeons released by devotees. Next is Sikkal, whose Singaravelar temple is linked by tradition to Murugan receiving his vel (spear) before the battle remembered at Tiruchendur. After a coastal lunch, we end at Velankanni, where the white basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, the old shrine and the path pilgrims walk on their knees lead down to the beach.

Good to know

Dress modestly for all three, with a scarf for the dargah, and expect to remove footwear often. Camera rules differ at each shrine; the host will tell you where photos are fine. Transport in an air-conditioned car and lunch are included. Feast days (Kanduri at Nagore, late August to 8 September at Velankanni) are very crowded; we run a shorter route then.

Know before you go

Most temples are living places of worship: dress modestly, remove footwear at the counter outside, and expect crowds and closed sanctums around midday. Photography is never allowed inside sanctums, and many temples now ask you to deposit phones. Each site's own rules are listed under its etiquette.

What to bring

  • Clothing that covers shoulders and knees (a dhoti, saree, churidar or long skirt is ideal)
  • A shawl or stole
  • Socks for hot stone floors
  • Small change for footwear and phone counters
Local customs
Dress code: Modest clothing for all three shrines; carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah. Walk clockwise around shrines, keep your voice low near the sanctum, do not touch idols or priests, and follow the queue. Offerings are optional.
Accessibility
Mostly level; long walks across hot courtyards. Car transport between shrines.

Visiting etiquette

Dress
Modest clothing is expected inside the basilica and shrines: shoulders and knees covered. Beachwear is not suitable away from the sea front.
Footwear
Many pilgrims remove footwear inside the shrines; follow the practice at each entrance. The courtyards get hot in the afternoon.
Photography
Photography is generally allowed in the courtyards and outside. Inside, don't photograph during Mass and follow any notices; never use flash near people at prayer.
Entry
Entry is free and the shrine welcomes visitors of all faiths. Bags may be checked during the feast days, when crowd control and one-way routes are in place.
Timings
The shrine is open from early morning until night, with Masses in Tamil, English, Malayalam and other languages through the day; see the shrine's website for the current Mass timings. The feast runs from 29 August to 8 September.
Offerings
Candles, flowers and small wax models of body parts or houses are common offerings, sold by stalls around the shrine. Tonsuring is done at the designated hall.
Behaviour
Keep silent during Mass and in the adoration chapel, and give way to pilgrims walking the path on their knees. Don't sit on altars or steps marked for worship.
