Ooty Lake was created in 1824 by John Sullivan, then Collector of Coimbatore, by damming the streams that ran down the valley. Tamil Nadu tourism has run boating here since 1973 and the boat house is one of the busiest stops in the Nilgiris. Each session is a 30-minute ride. Pedal boats are booked per boat (two or four seats); the row boat comes with an oarsman; shared motor boats are sold per seat. Arrive 15 minutes early to collect life jackets — they are compulsory.
