தீபாவளி

Across Tamil Nadu

Festival of lights, celebrated in Tamil Nadu before dawn on Naraka Chaturdashi with an oil bath, new clothes, sweets and crackers.

Main day is the pre-dawn oil bath on Naraka Chaturdashi. Also the Tamil Nadu government holiday.

In Tamil Nadu, Deepavali is celebrated on Naraka Chaturdashi, the day before the new moon in Aippasi (October–November), and its main moment is in the early morning rather than the evening. It marks Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura.

Families rise before dawn for an oil bath (Ganga snanam): the eldest applies sesame oil to everyone's head, and the bath is said to be as sacred as bathing in the Ganga. Then come new clothes, a small dose of Deepavali marundhu (a digestive herbal paste), prayers and the first crackers of the day. Homes prepare sweets and savouries such as athirasam, murukku, mysore pak and laddu, and share them with neighbours. For couples married in the past year, the first Deepavali, thalai Deepavali, is celebrated at the bride's family home.

In the weeks before, shopping streets such as T. Nagar in Chennai are packed. Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district produces most of India's fireworks. Lamps are lit in the evening, but in Tamil Nadu the larger lamp festival comes a few weeks later with Karthigai Deepam.

Good to know

  • Travel is heavy before and after Deepavali: book trains and buses early; the state runs extra special buses from Chennai.
  • The Tamil Nadu government usually restricts crackers to set time windows on Deepavali day; check the announcement and follow it.
  • Air quality can drop on Deepavali night in cities; people with asthma may prefer to stay indoors.
  • Many shops and restaurants close on Deepavali morning; markets are open in the days before.
  • Avoid T. Nagar and other shopping streets on the last weekend before the festival unless you enjoy crowds.
