About This Experience

The Doll That Never Falls

Thanjavur's bommai come in two famous forms: the round-bottomed Raja–Rani pair that rocks when touched and always rights itself, and the Thalaiyatti Bommai, a dancing figure whose head nods on a fine pivot at the faintest breeze. Both rely on the same idea — a heavy, rounded base that keeps the centre of gravity low. Palanivel Shanmugam's family has made them in a small workshop off East Main Street for three generations, and in the weeks before Navaratri every shelf is crowded with drying figures.

Clay, Paper and Patience

Palanivel starts with the materials. The base is shaped from local clay and dried slowly so that it does not crack. The body and head are built up in moulds from layers of paper pulp bound with gum, then smoothed and primed. Many workshops now cast bodies in plaster of Paris for speed; he shows you both and explains why he still trusts clay for the base — its weight is what brings the doll back upright.

Making Your Bommai

Because clay and paper take days to dry, you work on pre-formed parts. You will join the body to its base and test the balance, set the head on its pivot and adjust it until it nods freely, and then paint: skin tones, a bright silk-coloured saree, gold borders and jewellery, and finally the eyes and lips — the step Palanivel says decides whether a doll looks alive.

Golu Season and After

Over coffee you will hear how Thanjavur dolls find their way onto Navaratri golu steps across Tamil Nadu, and what the Thanjavur Doll GI tag means for the makers. Finished dolls, from small single figures to large Raja–Rani pairs, can be bought directly from the family.

The craft and its maker

Palanivel Shanmugam · Thanjavur bommai-making families, a hereditary household craft of the town
My grandmother painted the faces and my grandfather shaped the bases — I grew up sleeping among drying dolls in the month before Navaratri. I have made Thalaiyatti Bommai for thirty years and still paint every pair of eyes myself, because the eyes decide whether a doll looks alive. I am proud that my son, an engineer, comes home every Navaratri to help me balance the heads.

Know before you go

You are a guest in a working home or workshop: looms, kilns and casting pits are someone's livelihood. Expect to sit on the floor or a low stool, and to get your hands dirty with clay, dye or gesso. Prices of finished pieces reflect weeks of work — buying directly from the maker is the best way to support the craft.

What to bring

  • Clothes you don't mind getting paint on
  • Reading glasses if you use them
  • Clothes you don't mind staining
  • Cash or UPI if you plan to buy
  • A cloth bag or box to carry your piece home
  • Curiosity and patience
Local customs
Ask before photographing the artisan, their family or unfinished designs (some patterns are unique to a family). Do not touch looms, moulds or tools unless invited, and do not bargain hard — a fair price keeps the craft alive.
Accessibility
Seated work at a table in a ground-floor workshop. Suitable for children aged 8 and above with an adult.
