Pollachi, south of Coimbatore below the Anamalai hills, is one of Tamil Nadu's great coconut-growing regions, its fields of palms watered by canals and the breeze through the Palakkad gap. Your host's family has farmed coconuts here for three generations, alongside a few acres of banana and vegetables.
We walk between the rows of palms while the family explains how a coconut farm runs: irrigation, intercrops, a harvest every 45 to 60 days, and the prices that rise and fall in the town's markets. A climber shows how he scales a palm with a simple rope loop, and you see coconuts dehusked and split and copra drying in the sun, ready for oil. Then it's time to sit in the shade with tender coconuts cut fresh from the tree.
The morning ends with a Kongu home breakfast in the farmhouse: kambu (pearl millet) koozh, paniyaram, coconut chutney and filter coffee, with a bag of the farm's coconuts or cold-pressed oil to take home. The farm is a short drive from Pollachi town, on the way to Aliyar and Valparai.

Estates sit at 1,000–2,200 m: mornings are cool and misty and leeches appear after rain. Walks follow narrow, sometimes slippery paths between tea or coffee bushes.
