About This Experience

The Organic Garden

Kotagiri, the quietest of the three Nilgiri hill towns, is home to a community-owned organic tea garden run by a cooperative of small farmers. Unlike the vast corporate estates of Ooty and Coonoor, this garden is tended by hand — no machines, no chemicals, no monoculture. You walk through rows of tea bushes interspersed with pepper vines, silver oak shade trees, and wild herbs.

Tea Processing

The cooperative's tiny processing unit shows tea-making at its most artisanal. You watch leaves being hand-rolled on bamboo mats, sun-dried on cloths, and sorted by hand. The output is small but exceptional — exported to specialty markets in Japan and Europe. You taste three varieties: a green, a white, and the cooperative's signature oolong.

Kurumba Art

After tea, you visit a Kurumba tribal settlement nearby. The Kurumbas are one of the Nilgiris' original tribes, and their geometric wall paintings — made with natural earth pigments — are considered some of India's oldest living art traditions. A Kurumba artist demonstrates the technique and explains the symbolism: spirals for water, triangles for mountains, dots for stars.

Lunch & Connection

A simple vegetarian lunch is served at the cooperative: millet rice, drumstick sambar, and greens from the garden. The cooperative's chairperson speaks about fair-trade tea, indigenous land rights, and the economics of organic farming in the Nilgiris.

Know before you go

Estates sit at 1,000–2,200 m: mornings are cool and misty and leeches appear after rain. Walks follow narrow, sometimes slippery paths between tea or coffee bushes.

What to bring

  • Closed walking shoes with grip
  • Light rain jacket
  • Warm layer for the morning
  • Leech socks in the monsoon
Local customs
Stay on the paths and do not pick leaves or berries. Tea pluckers are at work — greet them, and ask before taking photographs.
Accessibility
Estate walks involve slopes and uneven ground; factory and tasting visits are usually step-free — check with your host.
