Four kilometres from Kodaikanal town on a dirt track, this wooden cabin sits in a clearing in the shola (montane evergreen) forest at 2,100 metres. Built with local pine and stone, it sleeps four in two rooms. There is no WiFi and no television — the cabin is deliberately off-grid (solar-powered lights and phone charging only). A wood-burning stove heats the common area, and a verandah with two rocking chairs faces the forest.
The shola forests of Kodaikanal are among the most ancient ecosystems in India — evergreen, mossy, and dripping with moisture. Trails from the cabin lead to viewpoints, streams, and meadows. The forest is home to the Nilgiri tahr, gaur (Indian bison), and over 250 bird species. The host provides a laminated trail guide and binoculars.
The cabin's caretaker (who lives in a house 200 metres away) prepares simple meals: morning porridge with local honey and fruit, lunch of rice and vegetable curry, evening soup and bread. The food is vegetarian, mostly organic, and emphasizes local produce — hill garlic, tree tomatoes, wild greens. Guests who want to cook can use the cabin's small kitchen.
This is a place to read, walk, sleep, and do nothing. The nearest mobile signal is 2 km away. Guests who cannot be unreachable for 24 hours should consider a different stay. Those who can will find something here that is increasingly rare: genuine quiet.
