Courtallam (Kutralam) is called the 'Spa of South India' because its waterfalls flow through dense forests of medicinal herbs, infusing the water with therapeutic properties that locals have used for centuries. The main season is July-September, when the southwest monsoon sends water crashing over five separate falls, but the falls flow year-round.
The trek begins at the main falls and follows forest trails to the less-visited Thenaruvi (Honey Falls), Shenbaga Falls, and the secluded Five Falls. The terrain is hilly but not technically difficult — well-maintained paths with occasional rock scrambles. Your guide is a local naturalist who identifies the medicinal plants growing along the trail: turmeric, neem, ashwagandha, vetiver, and dozens of others that traditional Siddha practitioners have catalogued over millennia.
At each waterfall, you can stand under the cascade — a practice considered both spiritually cleansing and physically therapeutic. The sensation of cool, herb-infused water pounding your shoulders after a sweaty trek is extraordinary. Locals specifically prescribe Courtallam baths for joint pain, skin conditions, and respiratory ailments.
Your guide explains Courtallam's history as a Siddha medicine centre, the role of the Tirukutralanathar Temple (which predates the tourist infrastructure by centuries), and the ecological challenges of balancing tourism with forest conservation. A simple vegetarian lunch at a local eatery is included.
