Pattamadai, Cheranmahadevi taluk, Tirunelveli district
Pattamadai pai are mats woven from korai, a sedge that grows along the Tamirabarani river near Pattamadai. The stems are split into fine strands, soaked and dyed, then woven on handlooms over a cotton warp; the finest 'pattu pai' (silk mats) are so closely woven that they feel like cloth and can be folded. Largely made by Labbai Muslim families, wedding mats woven with the couple's names and date are a speciality. Pattamadai Pai was registered as a Geographical Indication in 2013.
